Dr Lajaunie is based in the Population Environment Development Lab, Marseille/Strathclyde Centre Environmental Law Governance, Glasgow.
An expert in not one but three subjects
- Legal & Institutional – specialising in environmental law, ethics and representation of legal knowledge
- Sustainability – specialising in Sustainable Development
- Health Science & Biodiversity – specialising in Emerging Infectious Diseases, One Health Global Network
Beginning of career
Dr Lajaunie started her legal career working in the Ministry of Culture in France. When she left, she travelled to Vietnam to teach law and this is where she discovered the agronomy and ecological issues in relation to law.
Back in France, she became civil servant and joined INSERM the French research institute dedicated to human health and in 2004 she again returned to Asia for 4 years, teaching law in South Korea.
Returning to France
Upon returning to France a second time Dr Lajaunie specialised in rural development (sustainable development at SOAS, University of London) and joined IRD (on secondment), the French Institution for Research and Development, and was in charge of the Southeast Asia scientific programs of the Health Department.
She has since travelled around the world and spoken about International Environmental Law, Law and public policies on Biodiversity and Health and Public Policy at over 60 international conferences.
Current Projects
Claire is now a full time INSERM researcher, who is dedicating her time to work on improving the environmental law and specialising in planetary health. She spent most of her time between her home city Marseille and Southeast Asia.
She is affiliate researcher at Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law & Governance to work on marine topics and she leads the French team working on the international project One Ocean Hub led by Dr Elisa Morgera (SCELG).
Dr Lajaunie has contributed to many exciting projects and expeditions throughout her career and the work she has been doing is truly fascinating.
Dr Lajaunie has also written over 70 publications covering topics such as: The Emergence of Health Issues in Biodiversity Conventions, Ocean Governance, Big Data in environmental law, Health in ASEAN or ethical issues.
She has also co-written books and several articles with Serge Morand who is famous for his research in infectious diseases.
Interests
- Biodiversity law and infectious diseases through the One Health and Planetary Health approaches.
- Legal and ethical issues relating to biobanking and pathogens sharing;
- Interdisciplinary approach of law linking ecology, mathematics and computer science;
- Environmental law implementation and evidence-based policies and law.

Claire loves swimming in the sea and is fond of kung fu, one of her favorite local bands is Massilia Sound System and she also enjoys jazz.
